General procedure

Refund destination registration and receipt of refunds

The process depends on how you paid: automatic refund or registration-based refund. Keep your purchase receipt until the refund is complete. Pay the tax-inclusive price in store; after departure customs confirmation, the consumption tax amount is refunded minus service fees.

How to register your refund destination

A — Automatic refund: eligible credit-card or UnionPay payments are refunded to the same card after customs confirms export. No refund-destination registration is needed. Check eligibility with the shop. The supplied guide lists Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, American Express, JCB, Diners Club and Discover.

B — Registration-based refund: for other payment methods, scan the QR code on the shop notice or brochure to access the Traveler Portal and register a refund destination. Identity verification (eKYC) is required. The guide lists credit cards, UnionPay and QR-code payment as registration options; check the portal for details.

Deadlines and customs confirmation

Complete departure customs confirmation within 90 days counted from the day after purchase. Have goods checked before handing checked baggage to the airline; present purchases if inspection is requested. Register/apply for the refund within 90 days counted from the day after customs confirmation. You may apply after returning home.

Refund amounts and fees

Service fees depend on payment and refund methods. Fees are not returned when goods are returned. No refund is made if the refund amount is less than the service fee. Amounts are calculated in JPY; the receiving card or QR-wallet provider determines the exchange rate.

Japanese nationals living abroad

The Japanese leaflet is specifically for Japanese nationals who have continuously lived abroad for at least two years. The purchaser must apply in person and present qualifying proof at purchase. Eligible goods must total at least JPY 5,000 excluding tax per transaction, excluding shipping and service charges. Conditions for foreign nationals differ; consult the relevant language guide.

Traveler Portal and support

Use the Traveler Portal to view purchases and refund status or contact support. The supplied leaflet lists AI chat 24/7 and human support 09:00–22:00 Japan time.

Supported brands

The TRO generally applies across the brand. Stores using a shared tax-free service at a shopping mall or outlet may use a different TRO.
