Japan Airport & Seaport Tax Refunds | Customs Kiosks & Refund Locations

This page shows the locations of the tax refund (tax-free procedure) terminals at Japan’s airports and seaports, and of the terminals and counters that offer cash refunds.
The 7 major airports have customs kiosks and dedicated Visit Japan Web (VJW) Wi-Fi; other airports and seaports have tax refund terminals.
Check the locations and how to use them at each airport or seaport, so that everything from the customs confirmation at departure to the consumption tax refund goes smoothly.

 1. Online tax-free procedure with Visit Japan Web

Under the new consumption tax exemption system (refund method) starting November 1, 2026, the online customs confirmation with Visit Japan Web (VJW) will be introduced at the following 7 major airports.
The airports are Narita International Airport, Haneda Airport (Tokyo International Airport), Kansai International Airport, Chubu Centrair International Airport, New Chitose Airport, Fukuoka Airport and Naha Airport.

At these major airports, in addition to the kiosks installed in the airport, you can complete the customs confirmation from your own smartphone with Visit Japan Web.

The online procedure is available in the area where you can connect to the dedicated Wi-Fi in the international departure lobby (in front of the security checkpoint).

Other airports and seaports have no kiosks or dedicated VJW Wi-Fi; the customs confirmation is done at the tax refund terminals installed there.

 2. Customs confirmation results

When you complete the procedure with Visit Japan Web, a kiosk (major airports) or a tax refund terminal (other airports and seaports), one of the following results is shown about whether a customs inspection is needed.
  • GREEN (no inspection needed): No physical inspection by customs is needed. The customs confirmation is complete, and one of the conditions for receiving the consumption tax refund is met.
  • RED (customs inspection needed): Go to the designated customs inspection area and have your goods checked by a customs officer. Present your tax-free purchases and have it confirmed that you are taking them out of Japan.
* A GREEN result does not mean you receive a cash refund on the spot. The actual refund method and timing depend on the store or refund operator.

 3. Important notes on the tax-free procedure

You must keep your tax-free goods in a condition that allows them to be checked when customs asks to see them.
If you use or lose part of the goods in Japan, you may not receive a refund for the purchase record (receipt, etc.) that includes them.

 4. Cash refunds at airports

The customs confirmation and the consumption tax refund are separate procedures.
After the customs confirmation is complete, an amount equal to the consumption tax is refunded by the method set by the store or refund operator.
At airports with terminals or counters that offer cash refunds, you may be able to receive cash under certain conditions.
However, cash refund availability, refund operators, terminal locations and opening hours differ by airport.
Please check the locations of the kiosks or tax refund terminals, and of the cash refund terminals / counters, on each airport or seaport page.
Currently, cash refunds are available only at the major airports and Kobe Airport.
