Are there supermarkets in Japan where I can shop tax-free?
Note: Japan's refund-based Tax-Free system (pay the tax-inclusive price first, then receive a refund after customs confirmation) starts on November 1, 2026. Until October 31, 2026, the current Tax-Free system (tax-excluded price at the register) continues. The answers below describe the system from November 1, 2026 unless stated otherwise.
Yes. Some supermarkets in Japan offer tax-free shopping, but not every branch participates, even within the same chain.
Find shops by name or location using the taxfree.jp Tax-Free Shop Map (https://taxfree.jp/en/shop-map/), then confirm the current availability and procedures directly with the store before purchasing.
Eligible shoppers generally need to purchase qualifying goods totaling at least JPY 5,000 before tax. The goods must be taken out of Japan. If you consume any food, beverages or other consumables in Japan, the corresponding purchase record may not qualify for customs confirmation and a refund.
This page provides general information. Procedures and rules can change and may vary by store, refund provider, airport or port. Check current official guidance and contact your store or refund provider about your purchase.
